Writing a Book Review
Reading is a lot of fun. Sharing books you love with others is also a wonderful treat. This year we are working our literary muscles at RHES by challenging our students to read and review books online. Students who write most thoughtful reviews posted at this site will be invited to share his or her review on the school morning news.
Getting Started
You must read the book completely before reviewing it. The review must be written in complete sentences. Reviews written at this site will count toward the Richmond Hill Fire Department Reading Challenge! Reviews may also be submitted through Biblionasium.
Writing a Book Review
- Start your review by hooking your reader with an interesting detail from the story. This sentence should include the title of the book.
- Next, introduce the setting of the book. Where and when did your story take place?
- Third, describe the main character to your reader. Use at least one adjective.
- Describe your favorite part of the book. What happened? Don't give the ending away!
- Close the review by explaining why you would suggest this book to your friend.
A Sample Book Review
I read Ode to an Onion: Pablo Neruda and His Muse by Alexandria Giardino. I rated this book four stars. Have you ever thought an onion could be beautiful? This story takes place in a garden at lunch time. Two friends, Pablo and Matilda, are walking through the garden. Pablo is a poet, and he is very sad. Matilda tries to remind him of all the beauty they can find the in garden. My favorite part of the book is when Pablo begins to see the beauty of the onion. I like the pictures. If you like art and enjoy gardens, you will love this book.
